Aker BP to trial DAR technology

June 12, 2025

DAR 1920X1080

Collaboration

Welltec and Aker BP – Ivar Aasen field, Norwegian Continental Shelf

Technology

Density Activated Recovery (DAR) by Innowell

Scope

Three installations across three wells in early 2026

Objective

Autonomous water cut reduction

Aker BP to trial DAR technology

Together with Aker BP, Welltec is preparing to trial Density Activated Recovery (DAR) technology in the Ivar Aasen field (Norway), with deployment of the autonomous solution planned at the beginning of 2026.

Two systems will be installed across a single zone currently exhibiting an/a excessive/high-level of water production/cut.  The observable change can then be used to establish the effectiveness of DAR as an autonomous regulator of output, in turn showing its potential for minimizing environmental challenges and costs normally associated with handling and processing of produced water.

The ability to connect multiple screens to a single DAR unit further reinforces its suitability to counteract limited flow rates.

“Water cut is an increasingly challenging aspect of production as reservoirs become depleted/in older fields – this creates a lot of extra costs and processes that bring an environmental challenge and responsibility,” says Henriette Bringsvor, Business Development Manager at Welltec.

“DAR represents the next-generation of in-flow control technology, autonomously controlling production independent of fluid viscosity and velocity, the result of which is little to no produced water,” adds Bringsvor.

Improving water management

Momentum has gathered quickly since Welltec’s part acquisition of DAR creators, Innowell, in April 2024; Aker BP are now the second industry-leading operator to collaborate with Welltec via field trials within the last 12 months—Equinor is also set to pilot the technology in a live oil producer during Q4 this year.

A hub for innovation

The field trial comes at a timely moment, coinciding with the official opening of the Stavanger Technology Center on June 5.

The new facility serves as a collaborative hub for Welltec and several of its technology partners, including Innowell, enabling and supporting transformative energy projects such as this.
