Geothermal Well Completion & Intervention

Scalable solutions for direct-use systems and high-output geothermal wells

High-temp geothermal wells

Welltec® provides tailored solutions for geothermal well completions across a wide thermal range, from low-temperature direct-use systems to high-temperature resources operating at temperature above 330°C.

Our Welltec® Magma Packer (WMP) is the only all-metal expandable packer on the market qualified to withstand extreme geothermal conditions above 330°C, delivering long-term annular integrity in the most demanding environments.

In addition to the WMP, our broader packer portfolio includes the Welltec® Annular Barrier (WAB), Welltec® Light Packer (WLP), and other solutions designed for zonal isolation, cement assurance, and reservoir compartmentalization in geothermal applications. For well construction, the Welltec® Expandable Anchor (WEA) provides the industry’s only all-metal liner hanger system engineered for high load capacity and thermal resilience.

Our metal expandable packers provide a fullbore completion capable of withstanding acidic corrosion and extreme pressure/temperature swings associated with the geothermal environment. With the incorporation of the Welltec Expandable Anchor to our fleet, we provide the only geothermal liner hanger, capable of withstanding high temperatures and extreme loads during the life of the well.

The Welltec Flow Valves are a proven flow control system for large bores with no internal restrictions, providing effective injection/production control in geothermal wells.

All our completions technologies have been designed and qualified to serve multiple purposes such as cement assurance, zonal isolation, flow control and conformance and revitalizing shut-in wells suffering from parted or collapsed casing. The flexibility of these products allows operators to optimize geothermal well design, minimizing the risks and challenges associated with formation uncertainties and high temperatures.

The result: safe, prolonged asset life, enhanced well integrity, lower emissions, and reduced operational complexity.

Low-temp geothermal wells

Our Welltec intervention solutions are suitable for temperatures of up to 150° C, making it ideal for low to mid temperature geothermal wells. While not rated for high-temperature geothermal environments, our technologies can be effectively deployed in quenched wells, enabling efficient scale removal and cleanout with minimal environmental impact.

Leveraging more than 30 years of experience in scale removal from oil and gas wells, Welltec applies the same expertise to efficiently clear scale in geothermal wells, restoring flow and optimizing production. Silica and calcite scale buildup is a common challenge in geothermal wells, originating from varying reservoir conditions and thermodynamic properties over the life of the well.

To address this challenge, the application of e-line conveyed technologies like the Well Miller® enables rigless intervention with a truck-mounted winch assembly and utilization of a crane, therefore having minimal impact on the surroundings, and can even be utilized in urban areas.
